Creating a Unified Design System with Adidas

Overview

Adidas needs no introduction. One of the world's most recognised sports brands, with a digital presence to match; global and complex by nature. For four years, Build in Amsterdam, powered by Front Row, has worked as a close creative partner to Adidas, resulting in the development of their digital design system: a single visual language built to unify every corner of their digital ecosystem.

A collaboration that touched every digital team in the organisation, demanded next-level orchestration and resulted in a best-in-class design system that scales across every touchpoint.

Adidas is more than a single brand. Under its umbrella sits a constellation of high-profile sub-labels (Y-3, Stella McCartney, Ivy Park, Pharrell Williams) each with its own creative identity, audience and aesthetic DNA. The challenge was giving every one of them room to breathe, while keeping Adidas unmistakably in the background as the connective thread.

What made this particularly complex was that all of them lived on the same platform. There was no clean separation, every design decision had to work at two levels simultaneously: distinctive enough to honour each sub-label's individual character, coherent enough to hold together as one Adidas ecosystem. Finding that balance at scale, across some of the world's most opinionated creative collaborators, was the real challenge.

The objective was to bring order to complexity by building a single design system that could serve as the backbone of Adidas' entire digital ecosystem. One that was flexible enough to give each sub-label its own distinct identity, scalable enough to roll out globally and robust enough to empower Adidas' internal teams to keep building on it independently.

The solution was a design system built on three guiding principles: full-screen product-led layouts, a flexible component library that shifts tone per sub-brand, and content structured into clear narrative moments. Familiar UX patterns keep the experience intuitive; the system's architecture keeps it scalable. Developed in close partnership with Adidas' own engineering team and rolled out across every digital touchpoint, from the mobile app and social media to in-store smart fitting rooms, CRM and marketplaces.

To empower the Adidas design team long after launch, we built a Theming Playbook alongside the system. It’s a practical framework that shifts the mindset from visual consistency to experience coherence. Content-driven, story-driven and built for speed. A tool that lets their teams move faster while staying unmistakably on brand.
