Rebuilding Polaroid’s digital flagship with headless Shopify

Overview

Since launching the instant camera in 1947, Polaroid has been more than a brand; it's been a cultural phenomenon. Today, it's focused on unlocking the beauty of everyday, empowering creators around the globe to capture life as it happens.

Their digital flagship told none of that story.

Build in Amsterdam, powered by Front Row, reimagined Polaroid's global e-commerce platform from the ground up. Building a digital flagship that celebrates creativity, drives education and fosters community. A platform where the tangible joy of a Polaroid print meets the endless potential of the digital world.

Polaroid came to the project with two fragmented websites and a product range spanning everything from cameras and film to speakers, apparel and printers. A sprawling presence that was doing little to build brand clarity or loyalty.

The bigger strategic challenge was reclaiming their audience from Amazon. To build a brand destination worth coming back to, one that could offer something on top of marketplace presence: the Polaroid world, its culture and its community.

And then the creative challenge: how do you translate Polaroid's analogue soul that is raw, imperfect and alive into a digital environment without losing what makes it feel real?

The goal was to transform Polaroid.com into a single unified destination, consolidating Polaroid Originals and Polaroid.com into one platform built to perform across every dimension. That meant driving new audiences through stronger SEO and inspirational storytelling, building brand relevance through a distinctive content strategy and optimising every touchpoint in the conversion funnel. Underpinning it all: a seamless blend of utility and inspiration. Ranging from enhanced product pages and imagery to an improved customer service experience, all designed to deepen loyalty and turn visitors into a genuine Polaroid community.

The foundation was headless Shopify, built for flexibility, speed and limitless customisation. With Sanity powering content management for a scalable, future-proof backend that Polaroid's team could own themselves.

From there, the work was about capturing the brand's essence in every detail. We developed visual guidelines for lifestyle photography and product imagery and created a flexible design system that lets the new identity roll out seamlessly across all channels. Content was designed to educate, inspire and celebrate the creativity that Polaroid has always stood for.

To deepen the relationship with their community, we conceptualised and built a dedicated membership section, giving Polaroid's most loyal fans a space that's truly theirs. Throughout, we worked in close collaboration with the Polaroid team to make sure every digital touchpoint carried that unmistakable analogue warmth: raw, tangible and real.

Build in Amsterdam continues to partner with Polaroid on an ongoing basis, evolving the platform and collaborating on special product launches.
