Milk Makeup’s Sephora transformation with Front Row

Overview

Milk Makeup partnered with Front Row to translate their iconic identity into an impactful retail presence. In Sephora stores nationwide, standing out demands a compelling brand narrative that attracts new customers, no matter the location. The goal was to expand on the reinvigorated brand language with a visual merchandising system powerful enough to command attention and drive engagement in a highly competitive market.

We began by translating Milk Makeup's brand essence, its New York City roots, and the relevancy and effortlessness of its products, into a formal and emotional design language that guided every piece of creative, from form to communications to materials. The fixture itself became an editorial grid, showcasing the brand and products at their true core. A dimensional brand banner, distortion glorifiers, and a ticker-tape motif on Shelf 1 were designed to reinforce the brand's tagline, "Born in NYC." The goal was to create a strong visual impact while ensuring the system could survive the realities of the retail calendar: engineered to flex, easy to restock, and able to update without a full rebuild.

Once the fixture direction landed, Milk didn’t file it away. They came back to Front Row with a new ask: bring the same world to life at Sephora’s brand conference, the event where store managers from across the fleet gather to decide what they’re rallying behind for the year ahead. Milk needed to win the room.

We used the refreshed Sephora VM codes as the brief. We called it Exhibit M, Milk Makeup meets Milk Studios meets an art gallery. It's an immersive experience built around the brand's newly relaunched Sticks category, connecting the campaign's creative direction, 'SWIPE MODE,' to a gamified experience. Guests swipe a wall of phones and tablets to win gifted product, unlock lockers to choose their own shades, and walk away with a fully branded gifting suite.

It was the same DNA we came up with before, but a completely different format.

Our work with Milk Makeup is the case for treating brand systems as infrastructure for future projects. Milk didn’t need two agencies or two creative directions. The brand needed one point of view, built once and rigorous enough to scale from a two-bay gondola to a full-room activation.
