Sol de Janeiro: taking a beach-born brand global, without losing the sand
Sol de Janeiro built its name on a very specific feeling: the energy of a Rio beach day, bottled and shipped worldwide. That feeling is easy to capture in a jar. It's harder to capture in a 12-foot department store install, a Sephora gondola, and a duty-free kiosk at the same time.
Sol de Janeiro's brand had evolved, and its retail presence needed to catch up. Front Row came in to build a scalable global retail concept spanning Department Store, Specialty Beauty, and Travel Retail, one that matched the refreshed brand and could be codified into a Global Retail Sourcebook the brand could hand to any market, anywhere.
Objectives
A brand's retail presence usually fractures the bigger it gets. Flagship doors want spectacle. Gondolas want density and shelf discipline. Travel retail wants speed and impulse. Each channel pulls a different direction, and most brands end up with three disconnected identities wearing the same logo.
Sol de Janeiro's refreshed brand needed a retail language elastic enough to headline at Harrods, hold its own on a Sephora or Ulta gondola, and still feel like Sol de Janeiro in an airport. Nothing generic, nothing diluted, and nothing that reads like a downsized flagship or an upsized endcap.
Approach
Front Row built the system around a single organizing idea: the sun. We called it "sol-core," and it became the north star for every concept that followed. Warm gradients, citrus-bright yellows and oranges, and sculptural forms (domes, spheres, sunbursts) all trace back to it, giving each install an unmistakable Sol de Janeiro glow regardless of size or channel.
- Department store shop-in-shop, curved wall format — A curved fixture wall organized by ritual (Fragrance, Body Care, Gifting), anchored by a bold arched header and full product storytelling.
- Department store shop-in-shop, domed centerpiece — A domed centerpiece display built for standalone impact, paired with a secondary tower for new launches.
- Luxury counter experience — An elevated, warm-toned counter with try-me stations, built for a slower, more tactile luxury shopper.
- Travel retail shop-inshop — A compact, high-velocity dome fixture designed for speed and visibility in a duty-free environment.
- Sephora gondola — A shelf-ready modular system that keeps the brand's sun-drenched identity intact within Sephora's fixed footprint.
Every environment shares the same DNA (color, form, tone) while flexing its footprint, fixtures, and pacing to match the channel. The result was distilled into a Global Retail Sourcebook: a single reference that lets Sol de Janeiro deploy a consistent, unmistakably "beach energy" retail presence anywhere in the world, from a flagship window to a single gondola bay.
